Control your own emotional state

In order to be content, we have to take charge of our own emotions.  A great challenge is not getting annoyed or upset when people around me are angry, complaining a lot, or gossiping.  When this happens, I take these 3 steps:

1.  take slow, deep breaths

2.  concentrate on my breathing and become aware of my heart beating

3.  imagine myself in a bubble of white light, insulating me from my surroundings, and silently say to myself, “I am peace.”

These three steps work well most of the time.  If the situation erupts into violence, or if I cannot calm myself down, I leave the situation politely, and calmly, as soon as possible.
