I found this article pretty interesting, and I feel it might lend some useful information to those who question this subject as often as I do…I knew that you could ‘carry’ your yarn as you work up your project.  But, didn’t really know about the ‘twist’ thing.  Read on:

When working a pattern in stripes, sometimes you’ll see an instruction “Carry the yarn not in use along the side” (as with the Knit Shell Beach Washcloth shown…); other times you won’t see an instruction at all.
