Weddings including step-children

I spent the last few months recharging. After my step-daughter’s wedding in September 2015, and my daughter’s in November 2015, I needed time to myself.  I am divorced and both my ex and I are remarried.

Nothing brings up family issues like the marriage of your kids!  And weddings involving step families are never easy – the normal family issues  seem to be magnified.  How to deal with these?  Forgive, forgive, forgive.  As the Golden Rule states, do unto others what you would have them do unto you.  We are all human beings doing the best we can.  We all make mistakes and we all hurt other people just like they hurt us.  Often we have no idea that we hurt them and they have no idea that they hurt us.  Especially if we are born into families with poor communication skills.  It is no one’s fault.  Our grandparents passed it on from their parents to our parents, and it continues because we are afraid.  Afraid to be honest.  Afraid to change.  I know I wish people would forgive me when I am insensitive and unaware of their feelings.

I decided to do what it took to let go of the past and see all the people involved as people who just want to be happy, just like me.  We are not enemies on opposite sides – we are all human beings doing the best we know how.  And truly – the only way to be at peace yourself is to forgive others.
